Today we woke up and decided to take a hike before breakfast. We walked over to the Stairs if My Burden and hiked up all 388 steps! (My dad counted.) He made it all the way to the top with out stopping, but I had to stop 3 or 4 times... but eventually we made it to the top and had a great view! After we worked up quite an appetite we went to his favorite Belgian "Panera" and had breakfast. Then we walked past a shop that sold macarons, so of course we stopped. I got a lemon and a chocolate banana macaron. We went to my the college that he has taught at, and I ate the macarons and looked through my dad's pictures from the last time I was in Europe. I found a few of Maastricht that I wanted to recreate. Then, we bought some of my dad's favorite desserts-- chocolate lava cakes. We took those to go. Then we drove about 25 minutes to Maastricht, Netherlands. We arrived at the street we used to lived on and I recreated a picture from 11 years ago. We went to visit our old neighbors. They don't speak much english, so the visit basically consisted of watching an 83 year old man play charades for an hour. After that, we drove around Maastricht before going to our B&B (although, they don't have breakfast so it's really just a B). Then we went looking for a frikandel (a Dutch sausage link). We found a place and got some fries with mayonnaise and some spicy peanut sauce to go with it. Then we went to the city square (called the Vrijthof) to eat the lava cakes from earlier. My dad made arrangements to have dinner with a colleague of his and a coupledoctoral students. So we all went to a Greek restaurant that was fairly new. Right when we sat down we were all handed a black licorice flavored shot of liquor. (I think they did this to distract us from the food that followed because I didn't really think the food was that great.) Then we went to a bar, and the guy that owned it had 600 different beers in his basement. The way you order beer is by telling him what you like and he brings you his recommendation. After that we went back to our B(&B) for bedtime!
